Welcome Second Grade Families! I am so happy to embark on this journey with you this year. Please check out some information about Second Grade so that you know what to expect. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I check my email regularly.
-
Team Name:
Our classroom number is Room 10, so we will refer to ourselves as Team 10. Our theme this year is "We are bright!", so I have decorated our classroom with lots of bright colors.
-
First Day of School:
I will meet the students in the school foyer. I will have my nametag on. Please have your child wear his/her nametag on the first day of school. I will send the students their nametags in my welcome letter in August.
-
Snack:
We will have a snack break every day around 10:30 A.M. Please pack a healthy snack for your child that he/she can eat within a 10 minute time frame. Some examples of healthy quick snacks are: fruit, veggies, pretzels, crackers, granola bars, or yogurt.
-
Water Bottle:
Students are encouraged to bring in a water bottle every day labeled with their name. We have a water refill station by the cafeteria, so that students can stay hydrated throughout the day. If your child forgets his/her water bottle, we have water fountains located near our classroom.
-
Dismissal:
Your child will go home on the bus unless you write a note or call the office to let us know of a different dismissal plan. If there is a change in your child's dismissal plan, please write a note and send it in your child's take-home folder. If you need to make a change during the day, please call the office and they will inform me of the change.
-
Take Home Folder:
Your child will have a folder that is used to hold homework, finished work, and other important papers. This folder will travel back and forth from home to school every day. Please check your child's folder every day after school to keep up with notes/papers sent home as well as your child's homework.
-
Homework:
In second grade, students receive math homework about 2 days a week to review and practice recently learned concepts. Also, students are expected to read every night for 15-20 minutes. I will also send home a Fundations packet reviewing the current spelling patterns that we are working on in school so that you can help your child practice spelling words with the same patterns. Students will not get homework during the first few weeks of school, on weekends or holidays, and the last week of school.

Parent-Teacher Communication:
During this school year, I look forward to getting to know my students as well as their families. Some ways that I communicate with families include:- welcome letter sent in August
- weekly email updates informing families of what we are currently learning in school in each subject, any special events happening, and reminders about assessments and assignments
- phone calls home as needed
- Emails to parents as needed
- Back-to-School Night (September 19th)
- Parent-Teacher Conferences (Nov. 21-22 and Nov. 25-26)
- Parents are invited to the classroom for special events, class parties, and as guest readers.
-
Birthdays:
Birthdays are very special and so Team 10 will celebrate everyone's birthday in the class. Every birthday student will receive a birthday book created by their classmates and a birthday pencil and certificate from me. Also, the class will sing happy birthday to the birthday child, and the birthday child will get to lead our morning meeting. Parents are also welcome to be the guest reader on or near your child's birthday. Students with summer birthdays will be celebrated in June.
